The Australian Alumni Awards reception in Phnom Penh on March 28th was abuzz with energy as it celebrated the remarkable achievements of Cambodian graduates from Australian universities. The event showcased the transformative impact these individuals are making in Cambodia, emphasizing their dedication to advancing economic development as well as social and environmental justice across communities.
Among the distinguished awardees was Ms. Sophoan Phean, National Director of Oxfam in Cambodia, who received the prestigious Community Leadership Award.
Taking the stage to accept the honor, Sophoan expressed heartfelt gratitude to those who have supported her journey. “This recognition fills me with immense gratitude, as it highlights a journey made possible by the contributions of many,” she shared. She expressed her thanks to the Australian Government for its steadfast support and acknowledged the pivotal role of her colleagues, family, and friends. She reserved special appreciation for her husband, whom she described as her unwavering source of strength, his share of care responsibilities have enabled her to take up demanding leadership roles to make a difference in people’s lives.
“This recognition reinvigorates my commitment to building a Cambodian society that is inclusive, just, and resilient. Together, I believe we can make a difference,” she added.
Sophoan’s journey has been marked by excellence and passion. Her time at the Australian National University, where she earned a Master’s Degree in Public Policy specializing in Policy Analysis, enhanced her understanding of government structures and her ability to influence policy. Building on that foundation, she has taken on impactful roles, including serving as Southeast Asia Regional Advisor for Oxfam. From leading advocacy campaigns on climate action and gender equality to championing indigenous rights and promoting good governance, Sophoan has consistently demonstrated her dedication to driving meaningful change.
